Staying In
Documentary: Ai WeiWei – Never Sorry

Who’s your hero? Having just watched the documentary Never Sorry about the Chinese artist Ai WeiWei, he’s definitely got our vote. It’s a fascinating insight into this defiant, media-savvy, humorous and very human artist who increasingly comes into conflict with the Chinese authorities. When his blog is shut down, he turns to twitter and builds up a huge following. When he is beaten on the head, resulting in the need for brain surgery, he lodges a series of filmed official complaints. When his Shanghai studio is demolished, he launches a celebration meal. The documentary ends when Ai WeiWei is taken into Police custody and held without trial for 2 months, only to face a multimillion ‘tax bill’ from the Government on his release. Insightful and incredibly inspiring, this documentary is a must-see.
