Staying In
Documentary: Searching for Sugarman

You know that feeling when it seems like everybody is raving about a film that you haven’t yet seen? Well, that’s what happened to us with Searching for Sugarman, so we were very glad that we finally got the chance to catch it on i-Tunes last week – and it definitely lives up to the hype. An award-winning documentary (it won the Special Jury Prize at Sundance last year) about the singer Sixto Rodriguez whose music never took off on the States but became cult listening in Apartheid South Africa, the film follows two South African fans who decide to discover more about the enigmatic singer. We won’t give away the ending, but will just say that it’s a beautifully shot documentary that manages to cover both poverty in Detroit and repression in South Africa and still end up as one of the most heart-warming and life-affirming films of recent times. You can rent or buy it on i-Tunes and the DVD is available now on Amazon. To tempt you further, here’s the trailer:
