Art festival: The opening of Tate Modern’s Oil Tanks

Not content with being the most visited modern art gallery in the world, cultural Mecca Tate Modern is upping the ante this summer by throwing open access to its huge former industrial oil chambers, which sit to the south of the former power station. The subterranean cavernous Tanks’ opening extravaganza will see them play host to a 15 week programme of performance art, much of which invites mass participation and visitor interaction. We love the sound of Haegue Yang’s Dress Vehicles (11-16 September), a collection of mobile clothes sculptures that people can move about the space in a quasi dance; Tracey Moberley’s Tweet Me Up! (24 August) a live digital installation composed of audience social media submissions, including those from Twitter and Instagram; and Jon Fawcett’s Neir (16 – 17 August) where visitors are invited to visit one of six psychics in the tanks to build a ‘narrative of the unknown’. Throw yourself into it, we say – we’ll certainly will.
